Brief History
Mauritius was first discovered through the Dutch around the 1560's. They named it after a prince named Prince Maurice of Nassau. After inventing sugar canes and introducing the Java deer, they abandoned the island in 1970.
Five years later, the French inherited the land as theirs and renamed it to 'Isle de France' which translates to Island of France. They named the capital city after the ruling king in the period of time who was Louis the fifteenth. The French started civilization and built harbours, markets, and more.
In 1810, the British discovered the land and intruded the French; conquering them and adopting the land as theirs. The remaining French inhabitants were allowed to stay - keeping their religion, culture and beliefs the same. Isle de France was then renamed to Mauritius by the British.
Mauritius finally achieved their independence on March 12th, 1968 which became a national holiday for all Mauritians.
